Rail Spring Karkhana is Located near Sithouli Railway Station about 12.8 Kms way from Gwalior Railway Station. It is a unique workshop designed for manufacture of Hot Coil Springs of various types for different types of Rolling Stock of Indian Railways.

 

Rail Spring Karkhana Project was sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book item No. 247 of 1988-89. The Foundation Stone was laid by Hon’able Member Parliament Shri Madhav Rao Scindia. This is the largest dedicated plant for manufacture of Helical Hot Coiled Springs of Indian Railways. It was setup in 1989 on turnkey basis by M/s Ernst Komrowski & Co. Germany in Technical Collaboration with M/s Grueber, a Leading Spring Manufacturer of Germany. The total sanctioned cost for setting-up of the Project was Rs 54.04 Crores. The plant is equipped with state-of-the art facilities for manufacture of Coiled Springs. All furnaces of this plant are LPG fired.

 

Trial Production Started in February/March 1990 and the Karkhana was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Railway Minister Shri George Farnandes on 25th April 1990 in presence of Hon’ble member Parliament Shri Madho Rao Scindia. The Karkhana was initially headed by CPM Shri S. Venkataraman as the first in-charge of the Workshop as Chief Project Manager, which was later on operated as Chief Workshop Manager/RSK.

 

The Plant has now been modernized with the commissioning of new (Fiat) Coiling Line on 12.08.2011 with the latest facilities for manufacture of FIAT Bogie Springs for LHB Coaches. These machines were sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book item No. 536 of 2001-02 at a cost of Rs 45.70 Crores. The work of this Project was awarded by COFMOW to M/s BUMAR, POLAND on turnkey basis through M/s PCI Limited, as their Indian Agent. The new coiling line is presently on the regular use by RSK.

  

With the commissioning of the new fiat coiling line, RSK under the guidance of RDSO, has developed manufacturing process for manufacture of fiat springs. RSK has manufactured fiat springs & dispatched to RCF, Kapurthala for conducting field trials after successful completion of the fatigue testing of these springs by RDSO.

 

The work of Renewal of the remaining existing machines had also been sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book Item 361 of 2008-09. This work has been awarded to M/s L&T Limited, Faridabad at a cost of Rs 79.38 Crores on turnkey basis. The execution of Turnkey Project is under active progress by M/s L&T Limited and expected to be completed by March’2013.

 

RSK has been awarded ISO Certification for Integrated Management System (IMS) for Quality (ISO-9001:2008), Environment (ISO-14001:2004) and Occupational Health & Safety (OHSAS-18001:2007) from M/s BSCIC Certification Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi on 02.05.2012.

 

Railway Board has sanctioned the Project for developing storage facility for LNG at the sanctioned cost of Rs 2.51 Crores vide Pink Book Item 516 of 2012-13. This Project is being coordinated for its execution by the IROAF. LNG is less Hazardous, Economical and has high calorific value in comparison with the existing LPG.

 

Further a proposal for capacity Augmentation of RSK for an additional coiling line at an estimated cost of Rs 90.52 Crores has been sent to Railway Board for sanction under plan head 4200 for the year 2013-14. This proposal is presently under consideration by Railway Board.
