| Jhansi workshop develops enhanced capacity dustbins for coaches 20 times increase in garbage holding capacity | |
In a major breakthrough towards enhancing onboard passenger amenities, hygiene, and cleanliness along railway tracks, the Wagon Repair Workshop, Jhansi has developed and successfully prototyped an innovative, high-capacity modified garbage disposal system for LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches.
Overcoming Legacy Capacity Constraints
Standard LHB passenger coaches currently feature two onboard dustbins with a combined capacity of approximately 15 to 20 liters. on long-distance runs, this capacity quickly proves inadequate for continuous waste generated by passengers, frequently leading to overflow, cabin littering, and hygiene concerns.
*Integrated System & Design Principles
To permanently resolve this issue, Jhansi Workshop engineered an integrated waste transfer and storage system. The system comprises three seamless components:
1. Garbage Drop Box: Securely mounted on the coach cabin floor for easy passenger access.
2. Connector: Strategic linkage bridging the cabin floor to the undergear frame without altering original structural components.
3. Garbage Collector: A heavy-duty stainless steel storage container mounted under the coach frame.
Using a simple gravity-fed mechanism, waste deposited into the drop box immediately funnels into the sealed undergear collector, keeping odor and litter entirely out of passenger sight and living area.
Key System Benefits & Features:
• Massive Capacity Increase: Increases holding capacity from 18 Liters to 367.4 Liters (over a 20-fold increase).
• Effortless Waste Extraction: Features a specialized 3:10 taper design for rapid emptying during depot maintenance.
• Superior Hygiene: Facilitates independent two-way cleaning and sanitation of both the drop box and collector.
• Zero onboard Intermediate Handling: Eliminates the need for multiple manual emptyings during long journeys.
• Clean Tracks Initiative: Discourages passengers from throwing garbage onto railway tracks by offering accessible onboard storage.
Current Status & RDSO Submission
The prototype has been successfully installed and demonstrated in an LHB coach. The design has been formally submitted to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Upon completion of RDSO inspection and incorporation of any advised modifications, wider adoption across the LHB fleet will be undertaken.
