BRIEF HISTORY OF RAIL SPRING KARKHANA


     Rail Spring Karkhana is located near Sithouli Railway Station about 12.8 KMs south of Gwalior Railway Station. It is a unique workshop designed for manufacture of Hot Coil Springs for different types of Rolling Stock of Indian Railways. Presently coil springs for LHB & ICF type coaching are manufactured.

    Rail Spring Karkhana Project was sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book item No. 247 of 1988-89. The Foundation Stone was laid by Hon’ble Member of Parliament Shri Madhav Rao Scindia. It was setup in 1989 on turnkey basis by M/s Ernst Komrowski & Co. Germany in Technical Collaboration with M/s Grueber, a leading Spring Manufacturer of Germany. The total sanctioned cost for setting-up of the project was Rs. 54.04 Crores. The Karkhana was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Railway Minister Shri George Fernandes on 25th April 1990 in presence of Hon’ble Member of Parliament Shri Madhav Rao Scindia.

     The Plant has now been modernized with the commissioning of new (Fiat) Coiling Line on 12.08.2011 with the latest facilities for manufacture of FIAT Bogie Springs for LHB Coaches. Under this line, Bar Heating Furnace , Coiling Machine, Quenching Machine & Tempering Furnace were sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book item No. 536 of 2001-02 at a cost of Rs. 45.70 Crores. The work of this Project was awarded by COFMOW to M/s BUMAR, POLAND on turnkey basis through M/s PCI Limited, as their Indian Agent. After commissioning of new fiat coiling line, RSK under the guidance of RDSO, has successfully developed manufacturing process to manufacture of all type LHB springs. Presently RSK is manufacturing mainly all types of FIAT primary springs, & dispatching to all production units, workshops & coaching depots of Indian Railways.

      After completion of codal life of machines installed in the year 1989, the work of renewal of remaining machines (other than sanctioned in FIAT line) was sanctioned by Railway Board vide Pink Book Item 361 of 2008-09. This work was awarded to M/s L&T Limited, Faridabad at a cost of Rs. 79.38 Crores on turnkey basis. The execution of Turnkey Project by M/s L&T Limited was successfully completed in April’ 2018.

      RSK has been awarded Integrated Management System (IMS) for Quality (ISO-9001:2015), Environment (ISO-14001:2015) and Occupational Health & Safety (ISO-45001:2018) which is valid up to 09 Sept.2024. RSK has also been awarded for EMS (Energy Management System) Standard (ISO 50001:2018) issued by M/s Stanchuly Management Services, valid up to 19 June 2026.  Further, process of acquiring 5S certification and Gold rating under Green Co Rating certification of workshop is under advanced stage.
